How To Make a Room Feel Bigger

Which color makes a room look bigger?

In general, if you have a small bedroom, and want to make it feel bigger, you HAVE TO use light colors in your space. For example, DON’T pain your walls a dark color, go for white/light colored furniture, and use bright, airy colored furniture/decorations/wall colors to decorate your space.

HOW TO MAKE A ROOM FEEL BIGGER:

1. It's all About The Lighting

Let’s start off this post by talking about LIGHTING. Having good lighting in your room is a MUST to make the space feel bigger and brighter.

If you don’t have good natural lighting alone, you can always upgrade the lighting situation by using a bright ceiling light, and adding different light fixtures to your space.

2. No Curtains Or Sheer Curtains

I love curtains, especially in a bedroom, but if your room is ACTUALLY small, curtains could actually make your room feel smaller!

Curtains block natural light, and also the view from your window, and that results in making your room feel smaller and darker.

Though if you don’t like how your window looks like, or still want some privacy, you can get white sheer curtains.

That won’t make your room feel small, but will also not help your room feel bigger. Though it’s definitely nicer than having black-out curtains that will make your room feel small.

3. Use Furniture With Legs

Whether you are designing your bedroom, living room, or any other room – make sure to add furniture with legs!

By using taller furniture pieces with legs, you are adding height to the space, which makes the room feel bigger because you can see the floor under the furniture, and you also add hight to the room.

Furniture that sits on the ground will make your room feel heavy and blocked.

4. Make The Space Open & Airy

As we talked about in the beginning of this post, when designing a small room, your goal is to make it look as open, airy and light as possible.

Meaning, using light colors, having white/light colored walls, set up an open furniture layout, etc.

So, DON’T paint the walls dark colors, DON’T buy dark colored furniture, and avoid using dark wall decorations/decor accents.

Also, another tip, DON’T use patterns, or at least not too many of them in your room.

Patterns are eye catching, and can make the space seem smaller than it actually use.

So if you do want to use patterns in your decor plan, make sure it’s super minimalist (for example a leopard print throw blanket and that’s it).

5. White/Light Colored Walls

We discussed this a bit before, but let’s talk about it more – painting your walls a dark/bright color is a huge mistake to make if you want to make your room look bigger!

One of the best tips from this how to make a room feel bigger guide, is to paint your walls white, or if you do want to add some colors, I would go for the lightest colors possible.

If not white, go for beige/super light gray/baby pink/etc. Soft shades reflect light, so painting your walls in a light color is perfect for making your room look lighter and feel more open.

6. Decorate With Mirrors

Decorating your room with mirrors WILL make your room feel bigger. This is one of the top interior design tips you can’t pass on!

You see, mirror reflect views, they reflect lights, which in both occasions will make your room feel bigger.

For example, a small bedroom with a mirrored closet will look bigger than it actually is, because you get the illusion that you are in a bigger room. It gives more length and “space” to the room.

But it doesn’t have to be mirrored closets only, even hanging up a full length mirror or getting a standing full length mirror will make your room feel bigger as well.

7. Remember - Less is More!

If you really want to learn how to make a room feel bigger, remember this – LESS IS MORE!

Minimalist bedrooms are perfect for small bedrooms. By going minimal, which means decluttering your stuff, hiding things in drawers/cabinets/baskets/etc. and by not going crazy with wall decorations, you can really make your room feel bigger and much more open.

It is very important to keep your small space minimal and not cluttred.

8. Use Light Materials

When decorating your room, you need to make sure that you are using light materials.

For example, getting light colored furniture, going for a smaller light colored rug (and not a huge area rug), if you still want curtains, as suggested earlier, you can get white sheer curtains that still bring in light to the room.

9. Think Multifunctional!

The best home decor hack I can give you, is to think multifunctional!

You need to be smart when designing a small space, and you want to make the most out of the space without it looking too much.

By that, I mean that you should go for multifunctional furniture pieces.

For example, a bed with storage drawers in it, storage ottomans that are both chairs and storage units, a headboard with shelves, etc.

10. Go Big, Skip Small Decor Accents

By that I mean that instead of doing a collage wall, or even making a gallery wall, consider getting one large artwork piece, that will be the biggest wall decoration in the room.

This way, you are keeping it simple yet unique, and not filling up the space with a bunch of smaller decorations.
