How to Make a Room Feel Bigger
1. Let’s Talk About Lighting
Having good lighting in your room is a MUST to make a room feel bigger!
By saying having good lighting, I’m not only talking about natural lighting, but using artificial light sources as well like lamps and different light fixtures.
2. DON’T Hang Up Curtains
Although curtains definitely add a lot to a space decor-wise, if you are decorating a small room, curtains could ACTUALY make your room feel smaller!
Curtains block natural lights, and the window view, and that is what will make your room feel smaller and darker.
3. Add Furniture With Legs
No matter what room your are designing, make sure to add furniture with legs to the space!
By using furniture with legs, you are adding height to the space. Furniture that sits on the ground will make the room feel more blocked and heavy.
4. Make Your Space Open & Airy
When having a small room to work with, you want to keep in mind that the space should be open and airy.
Meaning, using light colors, opening up the furniture layout, painting the walls a light color.
For the DONT’S list – don’t use dark colors in the space, since it could make the room feel smaller.
Also, I don’t recommend decorating with patterns, since it is very eye catching and can also make the space seem smaller than it actually is.
5. Paint Light Colored Walls
Consider painting your walls in a light color. It doesn’t have to be white, you can go for different light colors as well.
Since soft shades reflect light, painting your walls in a light color is perfect for making your room feel bigger and more open.
6. Use Mirrors
One of the most known interior design tips for making a space feel bigger, is using mirrors!
Mirrors reflect the view, they also reflect lights, which both makes the space feel bigger.
For example, small bedrooms with a mirrored closet tend to look bigger than what they actually are, because it makes you feel like there’s more space in the room.
7. Less Is More
When designing and decorating a small room, you need to keep this in mind – LESS IS MORE.
In addition to the fact that the minimalist home aesthetic is trending these past few years, and than minimalist bedrooms are super in right now, it does make sense to keep your room minimalist if you are designing a small space.
By going minimal, I mean – declutter your belongings, don’t go crazy with wall arts, don’t use too many patterns, keep it simple, and even neutral.
8. Use Light Materials
When decorating your space, make sure you are using light materials for your space.
For example, if you still want to use curtains in your room, consider getting white sheer curtains, and not black-out curtains for example.
Another example, is instead of using a heavy/dark rug, go for a smaller light rug.
9. Think Multifunctional
If you want to make a room feel bigger, you need to think multifunctional when designing it!
By that, I mean getting furniture that serves multiple purposes. For example, a bed with storage in it (drawers/or actual storage space), or ottomans with storage that will serve both as a chair and as storage space.
10. Big Art, Small Accents
Instead of doing a collage wall or hanging a lot of photos, consider getting one large piece of artwork that will be the biggest wall art piece in the room.
And that’s it for today! I hope you found some good ideas on making a small room feel bigger 🙂
